Realizing that she needs to stop thinking about herself, Alice grabs Cricket and kisses him on the cheek to show the residents that she is just a normal grandmother. While Alice is happy with the outcome, as she believes they will get tired and things will "return to normal", she notices that the rest of the family including Cricket is sad that no one likes them now. All are clearly phony, yet the residents flee in terror despite Bill's attempts to calm them.Īlice's plan works too well as the residents grab pitchforks and torches and proceed to attack the Greens.

She then "transforms" Cricket into a chicken and "flies" through the air (using a kite look alike). Despite the lackluster attempt (tossing a wad of trash that reads "your curs'd") the residents fall for it, much to Bill's surprise as he tries to rectify the situation. Dressing in a robe, Alice attempts to scare away the residents by "cursing" them. When they tell Alice that they will "pop in" sometime, Alice decides to set her plan into motion. Bill decides to throw a barbecue so as to show that their family is friendly. Alice admits that she has been purposely building a frightening reputation in Big City as being a witch so as to scare people away as she does not want to have "friendly" people stopping by. One morning, Bill confronts her about her about scaring the kids away. The witch in question is really just Gramma Alice telling people, such as a group of kids, to get off her property. Various residents of Big City cannot walk by the Green Family house without being scared off by the "Swamp Witch". Think back to when you played Mary’s game. When Bill learns that Gramma has been purposely creating a frightening reputation around town, he throws a barbeque to befriend the neighbors. Movies have been made and television shows such as Supernatural, Ghost Whisperer, and The X-Files have tackled their own rendition of this legend. And Bloody Mary’s name continues to be chanted and feared. Urban legends are often rooted in local history and popular culture. It often consists of fictional stories associated with the macabre, superstitions, ghosts, demons, cryptids, extraterrestrials, creepypasta, and other fear generating narrative elements. The game is still played in households across the world. An urban legend, myth, or tale is a modern genre of folklore. Elizabeth Bathory was nicknamed the “Queen of Blood” and was convicted for murdering hundreds of young girls so she could bathe in their blood. Mary Worth was a witch who was executed in the Salem trials. Other people think that Bloody Mary is based on Elizabeth Bathory or Mary Worth. The Marian Persecutions took place in 1554 in which around 240 men and 60 women were sentenced as Protestants and burned at the stake. Mary later endured miscarriages and fake pregnancies, which she believed were a result of God punishing her for the Marian Persecutions. Boleyn was then beheaded by the king for treason. Boleyn was worried that Mary would interfere with Elizabeth’s succession and had Parliament declare her illegitimate. The king then married Anne Boleyn who gave him yet another daughter, Elizabeth. Her father was mad due to the lack of male heir and voided his marriage to her mother and separated them, forbidding her from ever seeing her mother again. Mary was the only child of King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. Most believe that Blood Mary originated from the English Queen Mary I, who was also called “Bloody Mary”. But there was a chance that they could see a skull instead (the face of the Grim Reaper) which meant that the woman was going to die before she marries. When they gazed in the mirror they would see the face of their future husband. The woman would walk backwards up a flight of stairs while holding a candle and a hand mirror. It actually used to be a way for unmarried women to see the face of their future husband. However, this wasn’t always how the game was played and it wasn’t always named “Bloody Mary”. Legend has it that she would come out of the mirror, angry because you called upon her, and would do a number of things ranging from screaming to stealing your soul to drinking your blood to clawing your eyes out. This ritual was done with the purpose of luring out the spirit of Bloody Mary. Or if you were really brave, you went in alone. You and a group of friends would go into a bathroom, lock the door, turn off the lights, and recite “Bloody Mary” three times while spinning in front of the mirror. Every little kid played this game at some point.
